Why Participate In Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Meetings

July 18, 20241 min read

Attending Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings is a crucial behavioral assistant role. You need to take part in the IEP meetings for children who are classified and attend the child family team (CFT) meetings. These meetings bring together all providers in the team to support youth and families.

As a behavioral assistant, you should ensure that youth attend the CFT meetings. If no youth comes to such a meeting, you cannot bill it. How would it feel to take part in a 30-minute or 2-hour session in an IEP meeting or Zoom support conversation without billing it? No behavior assistant would imagine such an experience. You can avoid working for free by advocating for youth attendance. Your role is to ensure youth attend the meeting to get fair compensation.

IEP meetings with schools call for more efforts from the behavioral assistants. These meetings bring together many school professionals and staff making them intensive. Despite this intensity, you must do your role of advocating for youth participation in this meeting.

Remember, the attendance of youth in the Individualized Education Plan meetings is what determines your compensation. As a behavioral assistant, you should advocate for their attendance to accomplish your role and get paid.
